Joint replacement of the hip and knee
“It’s all about providing the best care possible for my patients”
“I love my job,” Dr. Sage said. “Joint replacement surgery provides me with the opportunity to definitively address knee and hip arthritis, as opposed to just chronic management of the condition. It enables my patients to have a much better quality of life, and that gives me great satisfaction.”
Dr. Sage said he enjoys seeing patients in clinic as much as he enjoys surgery. “I like educating patients about their conditions and providing them with the non-surgical and surgical options. I treat them as I would treat a member of my own family.”
He also understands that all patients are different. “Some people are completely averse to surgery,” he said. “Some want to wait, and some want to move forward immediately. There’s no right or wrong answer. I provide all of the treatment possibilities but I never tell anyone they need hip or knee replacement. They tell me when it’s time.”
Dr. Sage earned an undergraduate degree at Cornell University, a Master’s Degree in Biology at New York University, and his medical degree at the State University of New York at Downstate.
He was attracted to Berkshire Orthopaedic Associates – an affiliate of Berkshire Health Systems – because of the caliber of surgeons and their support for helping Dr. Sage build a high-quality joint replacement practice. In addition, he was impressed by Berkshire Medical Center and the comprehensive program it has created around joint replacement surgery, which provides a continuum of care for patients before, during and after surgery. BMC has earned Healthgrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2017 and 2018, making it among the top 10% of hospitals in the nation for the procedure.
Dr. Sage also noted that with improved pain management and evolving surgical techniques, patients are recovering from joint replacement surgery more quickly and with less pain. In addition, he is using new robotic technology which supports greater accuracy in bone cuts and more precise placement of the implant.
“It’s all about providing the best care possible for my patients,” he said. “This level of technology enables me to consistently give them a perfectly balanced and aligned knee replacement,” he said. “That means better outcomes for patients and a better life ahead.”
